Driver Alert as Major Snowstorm Looms

Driver Alert as Major Snowstorm Looms

By Y.M. Lowy

Winter is finally showing face with a snowstorm expected today through Thursday. Governor Hochul is urging drivers to drive safely and take the necessary precautions while driving during the snowstorm.

In addition to snow, windy conditions will develop on Thursday. Friday will bring the coldest air of the season.

The New York State Department of Transportation is preparing for the storm with thousands of plow trucks, loaders, and snow blowers ready to clear roads.

The Thruway Authority is also closely monitoring the forecast and will deploy additional snowplows. New for the 2024-2025 snow and ice season, all the Thruway's more than 250 heavy-duty plow trucks are equipped with green hazard lights, complementing the standard amber hazard lights. Green lights are intended to improve visibility and enhance safety during winter operations, particularly in low-light conditions and poor weather.

Utility companies have 5,500 workers available to restore power if outages occur.

NYSDOT posted on X, “Our crews are ready to respond, but expect snow, gusty winds, and blowing snow making driving conditions challenging. Plan ahead and give yourself extra time to reach your destination safely.”
