DES Conducts Propane Flare Training At Indian Point

By Rockland Daily Staff

The Department of Emergency Services, in partnership with local fire departments, conducted a live training exercise at Indian Point in Buchanan over the weekend.

As part of the DES Hazardous Materials Team drill, a propane flare – which can potentially reach 40 feet in height – was safely ignited in the property’s lower parking lot on Saturday morning. Neighbors near the plant were warned beforehand that the propane flare may be visible and not to get alarmed.

Participants of the training exercise included the DES and its Hazardous Materials Team, the Indian Point Energy Center, Paraco Gas and officers from local fire departments. The training was designed to give first responders the opportunity to practice key skills in order to be prepared for similar situations.
