Congressman Mike Lawler Along With Other Elected Officials Hold Press Conference Opposing ‘Sanctuary County’ Bill in Rockland County

By Yisroel R.

Congressman Mike Lawler, along with other Republican elected officials and law enforcement representatives, held a press conference today opposing the proposed “Immigration Protection Act” put forward by Rockland County Legislator Beth Davidson in the Rockland County Legislature.

Lawler said the proposal poses serious public safety concerns and would restrict cooperation between local law enforcement agencies and federal authorities. He warned that limiting communication and coordination between agencies would make it harder for police to do their jobs and keep communities safe.

Rockland County Executive Ed Day, a former law enforcement officer, said the legislation was introduced without consultation with agencies that would be directly affected, including the Sheriff’s Office and probation. Day said the proposal would place unnecessary restrictions on law enforcement and could put both officers and residents at risk.

State Senator Bill Weber said Rockland County has long been supportive of law enforcement and criticized the lack of input from police leaders on a proposal that directly impacts officer safety.

County Legislator Lon Hoffstein raised concerns about the proposal, saying lawmakers were asked to consider the measure without being provided the full text of the bill or sufficient time to review it.

The press conference was held to publicly outline opposition to the proposal and to raise concerns about its impact on public safety and law enforcement operations. No vote has yet been scheduled on the measure.
