Congressman Lawler Demands Answers From State Department Regarding the Safety of Americans Trapped in Israel

by Rockland Daily Staff

Yesterday, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, sent a letter to Secretary Blinken demanding answers on the State Department's plan to account for and ensure the safety of American citizens in Israel.

"While we must work to ensure that Israel has all of the weaponry and equipment needed to defend itself, we must also address the situation that our own citizens find themselves in at the moment as well," Congressman Lawler said in the letter. "As casualties continue to rise into the thousands, Americans are fearing for their lives and searching for ways to return to the United States. However, flights are being canceled, and airlines are suspending operations in the region, stranding thousands without a way home."

The Associated Press reported this morning that Hamas has murdered at least nine Americans in the weekend attacks. Thousands of American citizens are currently in Israel, including hundreds of residents from New York's 17th Congressional District.

Congressman Mike Lawler's office is ready and available to help constituents in need, such as those presently unable to leave Eretz Yisroel.

"My office and I are continuing to monitor this terrible situation in Israel," Congressman Lawler stated on X.

The Congressman advises that U.S. citizens seeking to be in touch with the U.S. Embassy in Israel can fill out the form found here or call 1-833-890-9595 or 1-606-641-0131.

U.S. citizens in Israel should also enroll their contact information in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) here.

Lawler additionally suggested that travelers monitor the messages to U.S. citizens from the U.S. Embassy in Israel here for continued updates. Travel advisories for Israel will be posted here.

"Please do not hesitate to contact my office if you have any questions," Congressman Lawler stated on X.
