Check Your E-ZPass to Avoid More Expensive Toll Charges

If you have an E-ZPass, it’s worth taking a quick moment to make sure it’s stuck in the right spot in your car, or you might end up paying more when you go through tolls.

Since July 6, the Port Authority has had a new middle-level toll price. They say about nine out of every hundred tolls are charged this higher rate because the E-ZPass tag wasn’t placed correctly and didn’t scan the first time.

What does that mean for you? During busy times, your toll could jump from $16.06 to $18.72 if the tag is not in the right place. This applies to all the big Port Authority crossings like the Lincoln Tunnel, Holland Tunnel, George Washington Bridge, Bayonne Bridge, Goethals Bridge, and the Outerbridge Crossing.

If you don’t use E-ZPass at all, the toll-by-mail price also went up to $22.38. This is the Port Authority’s way of pushing more drivers to switch to E-ZPass.

Be sure to check that your E-ZPass is mounted on your windshield exactly as the instructions say to save on tolls.
