BOCES Students Get Inside Look at Hazardous Materials Response in Rockland
By Y.M. Lowy
Students from Rockland BOCES recently took part in a hands-on learning trip to the Rockland County Fire Training Center, where they were introduced to how emergency crews handle hazardous materials, often referred to as “hazmat.”
Hazmat situations involve dangerous substances like chemicals, gases, or spills that can pose serious risks to people and the environment. Specially trained responders are called in to contain these materials safely and prevent harm.
During the visit, students in the Criminal Justice program met with members of a hazmat response team, who explained how these emergencies are handled and what safety steps are taken. They also watched live demonstrations showing how chemicals are contained, saw how protective hazmat suits are used, and toured the facility.
The visit is part of Rockland BOCES’ Career and Technical Education program, which focuses on giving students real-world experience and a clearer understanding of careers in emergency response and public safety.
