Bill to Install Preventive Fencing on Hudson Valley Bridges Moves to State Assembly for Consideration

Senate Bill S2708A, which aims to prevent suicides by adding preventive fencing to five Hudson Valley bridges, passed the New York State Senate unanimously with sixty-one floor votes on Tuesday, June 4. State Senator Pete Harckham introduced the bill, which is co-sponsored by Senators James Skoufis, Robert Jackson, and Nathalia Fernandez.

The Bear Mountain Bridge is one of the bridges included in the request for preventive fencing. 

The bill requires the installation of climb deterrent fencing on all bridges under the jurisdiction of the New York State Bridge Authority.

The five Hudson Valley bridges are:

  • Bear Mountain Bridge
  • Rip Van Winkle Bridge
  • Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridg, 
  • Mid-Hudson Bridge
  • Newburgh-Beacon Bridge

The bill will move to the State Assembly for consideration.
