Rockland Daily is saddened to report on the passing of Rav Shmuel Yosef Fishbain zt”l, who served as Chief Rabbi of White Lake for more than 55 years.

With unwavering mesiras nefesh, warmth, and dedication, he guided the community and became a defining presence in the Catskills region.

Rav Fishbain was a link to the prewar European and early postwar American Torah world. To residents, vacationers, and families in White Lake and beyond, he was more than a rav — he was a trusted guide, a guardian of Torah values, and a symbol of authentic hashkafah. His influence extended far beyond his shul.

Born in Chicago in 1927, he grew up in a very different era of American Jewish life. His father, Reb Nochum Dov Fishbain, was among the early builders of Torah in the Midwest and established what was then the only yeshiva in Chicago.

After Reb Nochum Dov’s early passing, Rav Shmuel Yosef’s mother, Miriam Devorah a”h, raised him with remarkable sacrifice. Though it was rare at the time to send children far from home to learn, she sent Rav Shmuel Yosef and his brother to New York to learn in Yeshiva Torah Vodaas.

The Fishbain home in Chicago was known for Torah and hachnosas orchim. Traveling Torah giants traveling to strengthen Yiddishkeit in America were welcomed there.

As a boy, Rav Fishbain hosted and observed gedolim including Rav Elchonon Wasserman zt”l Hy”d, the Rayatz of Lubavitch zt”l, the Lomza Rosh Yeshivah, and others. Those encounters shaped him, and he would later recount them with vivid detail, preserving a living connection to a bygone era.

As a young man, Rav Fishbain devoted himself to learning. He learned at Torah Vodaas and later in Telz, absorbing the spirit of America’s emerging yeshivah world. He grew close to Rav Yisroel Zev Gustman zt”l at Yeshivas Netzach Yisroel, where he eventually served as a maggid shiur, teaching with clarity, depth, and warmth.

Throughout his life he maintained close relationships with many leading Torah figures and Admorim. Among them were the Bobover Rebbes, the Satmar Rebbe, the Tzelemer Rov, and the Skverer Rebbe, as well as Rav Avrohom Pam zt”l, Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l, Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky zt”l, Rav Eliezer Silver zt”l, and Rav Avigdor Miller zt”l.

Before White Lake, Rav Fishbain served as rov in other Catskills communities, including Ellenville and Hurleyville, ministering to both year-round residents and the thousands who summered in the mountains. In the early 1970s he became rav of White Lake, a position he held until his passing.

For over five decades he was a pillar of Torah in the Catskills. Through changing generations he remained steadfast in Torah, halachah, and hashkafah. With humility and dignity he carried the community’s burdens, devoting himself fully to their needs. His life centered on Torah and avodas Hashem, yet he was approachable and deeply caring to every person. Whether guiding families, giving shiurim, or upholding the standards of earlier generations, he exemplified the responsibility and nobility of the classic American rov.

Even in later years, he was regarded as an elder statesman of Torah Jewry in the Catskills, respected across the Torah world for his wisdom, integrity, and uncompromising principles.

Rav Fishbain is survived by his Rebbetzin, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who carry forward his legacy of Torah and Yiddishkeit.

The levayah be at Bais Yisroel, located at 92 Main Street in Monsey, NY, at 10:30 a.m. Kevurah will follow at the Monsey Chevrah Kadisha Cemetery on Brick Church Road.
