Assemblyman Aaron Wieder Meets with Community members to Advance Traffic Safety Solutions at Old Nyack Turnpike and Saddle River Road
Community efforts to improve traffic safety and infrastructure coordination at the intersection of Old Nyack Turnpike and Saddle River Road gained important momentum this week following a productive meeting with State Assemblyman Aaron Wieder.
For more than two years, residents along this corridor have raised concerns about traffic congestion, unsafe pedestrian crossings, and the cumulative impact of multiple developments in the area.
What began as conversations among neighbors has grown into a structured community initiative focused on safer roads, coordinated planning, and responsible growth.
During the meeting, Assemblyman Wieder listened carefully to detailed proposals presented by community representatives, including short-term pedestrian safety improvements and long-term intersection and roadway redesign concepts. He expressed strong interest in supporting efforts that prioritize safety while allowing development to move forward responsibly.
Among the proposals discussed were enhanced pedestrian protections at Old Nyack Turnpike and Hammond Street, a comprehensive redesign of the intersection at Old Nyack Turnpike and Saddle River Road, and improved coordination between Town, County, and State agencies to ensure infrastructure keeps pace with development.
Assemblyman Wieder indicated his readiness to assist in facilitating conversations at the state and county level where necessary, recognizing that the impacted roadways involve shared jurisdiction.
Community members emphasized that this initiative is not opposed to development, but is focused on ensuring that safety improvements are addressed proactively — before additional strain is placed on already burdened roads.
Over the past several weeks & months, residents have met with Town officials, County representatives, State legislators, planners, and engineers, launched a petition gathering hundreds of signatures, and spoken at multiple public hearings — steadily bringing the issue to the forefront of local government discussions.
Additional meetings with elected officials and stakeholders are planned in the coming days to continue advancing these discussions and pushing for coordinated solutions.
As the effort continues to grow, residents remain committed to constructive engagement and collaboration with all levels of government to protect families and ensure responsible planning for the future, and to see an immediately change to this issue.
