Another Community Gun Buyback Program
By M. C. Millman
Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco and local law enforcement agencies have initiated another Community Gun Buyback program to help stop the violence.
The gun buyback program is done in partnership with the Haverstraw and Stony Point Police Departments in cooperation with the Rockland County District Attorney's Office and the New York State police.
The gun buyback is an anonymous program, with no questions asked and no identification required. It will take place on Tuesday, December 13, from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Village of Haverstraw Department of Public Works, 115 Bowline Plant Road in Haverstraw. Firearms transported to the buyback event should be unloaded and brought in the vehicle's trunk.
Those who turn in an antique or non-working gun will be awarded a pre-paid gift card of twenty-five dollars. A rifle or shotgun will earn a seventy-five dollar gift card. Turning in a handgun will earn a one hundred and fifty dollar gift card. An assault rifle will earn a two hundred and fifty dollar gift card.
"To think that criminals are going to hand in their guns for a little bit of money is foolish," Tzi Waldman, founder of NYS Jewish Gun Club, shared with Rockland Daily in August, right before the last gun buyback event. "This is just an event that makes them feel good and makes people think it's going to help the gun violence problem. At the end of the day, a criminal that has a gun and wants to conduct illegal activities with it will not just hand it in. I can think of better ways for the government to spend money if they're really interested in fighting crime and stopping gun violence. "
