Spring Valley Resident Dies Following Tragic Car Accident

Spring Valley Resident Dies Following Tragic Car Accident

Early Sunday morning, August 3rd, at approximately 1:00am, a Ramapo Police Officer was flagged down near 64 E. Eckerson Road by several people appearing to need assistance. At the same time, the Ramapo Police Emergency Communications Division received a call for a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

Upon his arrival, the officer discovered a male partly stuck underneath a 2014 red Toyota Prius in the parking lot of 64 East Eckerson Road. The male was seriously injured but was still breathing, conscious and semi-responsive. Spring Hill Ambulance and Rockland Paramedics quickly responded to the scene, while Hillcrest Fire Department was dispatched as well, and a car jack was provided by a bystander to lift the vehicle and extricate the victim.

He was treated at the scene and transported to Nyack Hospital, where he sadly died of his injuries. The identity of the victim, a 45-year-old male resident of Spring Valley, is being held pending proper notification to his next of kin.

The driver of the 2014 Toyota Prius, a 32-year-old female from Spring Valley remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The female, who was working as a taxi driver, was determined not to be under the influence at the time of the crash. She was arrested for operating with a suspended license and released with a future court date in the Town of Ramapo. It appears that the taxicab was leaving the location after dropping off a fare when she struck the 45-year-old male who was laying in the parking lot.

Interviews with witnesses at the scene, indicate that the male may have been the victim of an assault prior to being struck by the vehicle. However, it does not appear the taxi driver was in any way involved in this possible assault.

Due to the circumstances surrounding this incident, both the Ramapo Police Detective Bureau and the Ramapo Police Crash Investigation Unit began a joint investigation into the crash and what may have occurred prior to the crash.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to call the Ramapo Police Department at (845) 357-2400.
