South Nyack Street Renamed in Honor of PO Courtney F. Smith

By Y.M. Lowy

A portion of South Broadway in South Nyack was officially dedicated this past weekend as PO Courtney F. Smith Way, honoring a trailblazing officer whose impact on the community is still felt decades later.

In March 1966, Courtney F. Smith became the first African American police officer appointed to the Village of South Nyack Police Department. He served the community for more than 20 years, retiring in 1989.

Those who knew him say he represented what community policing is meant to be, even before the term became common. He built trust with residents, mentored young people, helped de-escalate tense situations, and approached the job with compassion.

Smith also played a key role in shaping future generations of law enforcement. He mentored officers who later went on to serve across Rockland County and with the NYPD. He was instrumental in forming the Westchester Rockland Guardians, helping strengthen partnerships and promote diversity within law enforcement.

Officials and community members gathered for the dedication ceremony, calling the street renaming a fitting tribute to a man whose service, leadership, and humanity left a lasting mark.

With his name now permanently placed along South Broadway, PO Courtney F. Smith’s legacy will continue to stand as a reminder of the difference one officer can make in a community.
