Scam Alert: Ramapo Officials Warn of Email Scams Targeting Homeowners

By Y.M. Lowy

Homeowners and developers in Ramapo are being targeted by a new scam, and officials want residents to be extra careful. Fake emails claiming to be from the Town of Ramapo are asking for zoning or planning board fees via wire transfer.

Michael Specht, the Town of Ramapo Supervisor, told RocklandDaily that these messages are not legitimate. “I urge everyone to be cautious and skeptical in responding to or acting upon any email claiming to be from any government agency seeking an electronic payment,” he said. “The Town of Ramapo does not collect fees in this manner. Anyone receiving such an email should report it to the police and not respond.”

Officials say the safest approach is to verify any requests directly through town offices and avoid sending money to anyone via unsolicited emails.
