Rockland County Warns Residents About Winter Fire Risks
By Y.M. Lowy
Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services is asking everyone to be extra careful as the weather gets colder. Most home heating fires happen in the winter, and officials want people to stay safe while keeping warm.
They say space heaters should be kept three feet away from anything that can burn, like blankets or furniture. Heaters should be plugged straight into the wall since extension cords can overheat.
Residents are also being reminded to clean chimneys, check smoke alarms, and make sure heaters are vented the right way. These steps help prevent dangerous situations when homes are running heat all day and night.
Keeping warm is important, but staying safe is an even bigger hazard in the winter. A little caution can prevent a serious fire and keep families protected through the winter.
