By Y.M. Lowy

A large fire broke out Monday afternoon at the Sterling Carting building on Sterling Mine Road, sending heavy smoke into the sky and keeping firefighters on scene for more than 12 hours.

According to the Thiells Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 2 p.m. on March 2. The fire continued burning until about 3 a.m. as firefighters worked steadily to bring it under control.

The Sloatsburg Fire Department responded alongside multiple neighboring departments. Volunteers rotated crews through the night, battling the massive blaze in tough conditions.

Village officials thanked Chief Swanson and all responding agencies for their work, including the departments that assisted at the scene and those that stood by at the firehouse to ensure the rest of the village remained protected.
