Lawler Reintroduces SALT Tax Relief Bill

By Y.M. Lowy

Congressman Mike Lawler has reintroduced the SALT Fairness and Marriage Penalty Elimination Act, aiming to increase the cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions to $100,000 for single filers and $200,000 for married couples filing jointly. This change seeks to alleviate the financial burden on residents of high-tax areas like New York’s Hudson Valley. Residents in high-tax regions like the Hudson Valley often face higher federal tax bills due to the current SALT cap. This legislation aims to provide immediate relief to these taxpayers.

By increasing the cap for married couples, the bill addresses the problem of the “marriage penalty,” where married couples pay more in taxes than they would as two single individuals.

While the bill is a step toward addressing the SALT cap issue, some lawmakers advocate for a full repeal to provide broader relief. The debate continues as Congress considers various approaches to tax reform.
