Dozens Attend Rally To Save Newburgh-Beacon Ferry
By Idy Perl
Dozens of residents in the Beacon area showed up to a rally on Tuesday, at the Beacon ferry dock on Red Flynn Drive in Beacon, to try and save the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry.
The rally was in response to the MTA announcing that they will be permanently closing down the ferry, which takes commuters across the Hudson River to access the Metro-North train lines, after it was suspended in January due to damage to the dock. The MTA has a shuttle service in place of the ferry since it was suspended, but locals and officials are fighting to keep the ferry open.
"The MTA discontinuing this ferry service – and ignoring the impassioned, continuous pleas of our community – is a reckless abandonment of the people it’s supposed to serve, turning its back on the Hudson Valley yet again, while happily taking our tax dollars,” Rep Pat Ryan said in a statement.
