Congressman Lawlers NY-17 District Looks to Remain Unchanged as Democrats Tamper With Congressional Map

By M. C. Millman
After Democrats in the State Legislature voted down the Independent Redistricting Commission's congressional map yesterday, as reported by Rockland Daily here, their latest revised map draft will not alter Congressman Mike Lawler's 17th District.
"It was great news for Rockland County to learn that Progressives are likely to leave Congressman Lawler's district alone," New York State Senator Bill Weber shares exclusively with Rockland Daily. "However, this does not in any way negate their hyper-partisan gerrymandering, ignoring the will of the people and disrespecting a bipartisan group designed to prevent the self-serving behavior they are now pursuing in other parts of New York State."
While the exact map the Democrats will produce has yet to be finalized, the current draft does not affect the 17th District.
Legislators will need to limit changes they try to make to the Independent Redistricting Commission map to no more than 2%. That means no more than 15,000 people per District can be shifted according to law.
A draft of the replacement map is expected later this week.
