Blood Moon to Appear Over New York Tonight

By Y.M. Lowy

A total lunar eclipse will be visible tonight, March 13-14, over New York City and nearby areas, including Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and New Jersey. This event is often called a “Blood Moon” because the moon may appear red or orange when it passes into Earth’s shadow.

The best place to see the eclipse is in the central Hudson Valley, just north of New York City. A lunar eclipse happens when the sun, Earth, and moon align, and the moon enters the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow.

The next total lunar eclipse won’t happen until June 2029.
